Xabi Alonso will have a different title to any of BlueCo’s Chelsea appointments
In the immediate aftermath of Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester City on Saturday afternoon, it was strongly reported that the Blues have secured the services of manager Xabi Alonso.
Joe Cole was furious with Chelsea’s owners, BlueCo, after the FA Cup final loss, suggesting that the timing was a clear PR move by the hierarchy to soften the blow of Chelsea losing to Man City at Wembley.
YOU DECIDE: Who should Chelsea sign this summer?💰
Nevertheless, Alonso is due to sign a four-year contract at Chelsea, and some reports claim that Chelsea will announce the appointment of the former Real Madrid and Leverkusen manager as early as Sunday.
There have been plenty of murmurs that Alonso would be given more power at Chelsea than the others who have followed before him, given the calibre of the Spaniard. Now, BlueCo are set to make that clear.
Xabi Alonso to become BlueCo’s first Chelsea ‘manager’
BlueCo has made four permanent managerial appointments since coming to the club. Following the sacking of Thomas Tuchel in September 2022, Graham Potter was announced but only lasted 32 games.
Mauricio Pochettino, Enzo Maresca, and Liam Rosenior have since taken on the reins at Stamford Bridge, but all four appointments have been labelled as Chelsea’s head coach, with BlueCo retaining influence.

According to The Mail’s Kieran Gill, Alonso will be announced as Chelsea’s manager. The first time BlueCo has handed the term manager to an incoming gaffer, and a clear indication they are giving Alonso power.
Gill reported on X: “Xabi Alonso is set to have the title “manager” at Chelsea rather than “head coach”, indicating greater say.”
It will come as good news to Chelsea fans, who have grown fed up of BlueCo’s involvement. For Maresca, it might come as a source of frustration, forced to leave the club because he questioned the interference.
Alonso wields Chelsea power over future of key Blues do
Following the reports that Alonso is set to become Chelsea’s next manager, it will come as impressive to supporters that the Liverpool icon has already wielded some of his newfound power in West London.
DISCUSS: Xabi Alonso can finally make the BlueCo era a success 👀
The incoming Chelsea boss has made it clear to the owners that Enzo Fernandez and Marc Cucurella must remain at the club this summer. Fernandez and Cucurella spoke of their desire to leave back in March.
But Cucurella and Fernandez will surely be delighted with the appointment of Alonso. Cucurella, because Alonso is one of the finest players to ever play for Spain, and because Fernandez is a central midfielder.
Ultimately, BlueCo’s decision to hand Alonso the title of manager is a show of intent to supporters that they are taking a step back and allowing Alonso to get on with things himself as Chelsea’s next gaffer.
