The England international impressed in front of national team manager Thomas Tuchel, with him equally as good in position as out of it.

Frequently, Colwill would break the lines with his passing into midfield or attack, getting Chelsea moving in attack.

Alan Shearer was very impressed by this aspect of his game, describing his passing during commentary for BBC Sport as ‘outstanding’.

He said: “Colwill’s passing has been absolutely outstanding up to now. Whether he’s played that ball into the midfield or pinged it out wide, he’s got it spot on at the minute.”

The Englishman was a key member of the back three for Chelsea, a system frequently used by Xabi Alonso when he was in charge of Bayer Leverkusen.

Colwill will play crucial role under Xabi Alonso

In the aftermath of Chelsea’s defeat, it was heavily reported that Alonso had agreed to become the new Chelsea manager on a four-year contract.

It is expected he will be given more control over proceedings than previous managers have. Alonso has already asked for Enzo Fernandez and Marc Cucurella to stay at the club this summer.

The incoming manager also wants new centre-backs to be brought in by Chelsea, likely to complement Colwill who looks a stalwart in this side.
