Xabi Alonso agrees four-year contract to become new Chelsea manager
Chelsea have reached an agreement with Xabi Alonso to become their manager.
Alonso has accepted a four-year contract after positive talks with Chelsea’s hierarchy, ending the club’s search for a permanent successor to Liam Rosenior.
The 44-year-old travelled to London earlier this week to finalise discussions and is enthusiastic about the opportunity to take charge at Stamford Bridge despite interest from elsewhere.
Chelsea identified Alonso as their leading target from the beginning of the process.
While Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola was also admired internally, Alonso quickly emerged as the preferred option due to his reputation, tactical profile and ability to command authority.
The appointment marks Alonso’s return to the Premier League after his successful playing spell with Liverpool.
He won the Champions League with the Reds and established himself as one of the finest midfielders of his generation.

Alonso has been out of work since leaving Real Madrid in January after a difficult seven-month spell.
Despite winning 10 of his first 11 league matches, Madrid’s campaign eventually unravelled amid dressing-room tensions and inconsistent performances, leading to his departure.
That setback did little to damage Alonso’s standing across Europe following his impressive work at Bayer Leverkusen, where he guided them to an unbeaten domestic title-winning campaign in 2023-24.
Chelsea believe that achievement demonstrated Alonso’s ability to build a winning structure while improving younger players.
The club’s hierarchy reassured Alonso over his influence on recruitment decisions. The Spaniard wanted a stronger voice in squad building before accepting the role.
