Fernandes was shocked by West Ham’s “painful” opening 20 minutes at St. James’ Park after wanting a fast start.

Nuno’s plans completely fell apart with some shocking defending, which gave the Hammers a mountain to climb in the second half.

Fernandes refused to blame the Portuguese manager after the game, blaming himself and his teammates for the result.

“The first 20 minutes were so painful for us,” he told Sky Sports. “We are trying to do one thing, and when we arrived, we did the other thing.

“They scored the chance, and after that, we tried to create and just scored one goal.

“We have this week to believe, we just need to believe. It’s our responsibility, and we need to do much better.

Fernandes gave a reasonable answer when asked about the supporters voicing their frustration at full-time.

He accepted that the Hammers’ display deserved criticism and looked ahead to a nervy wait until Spurs play Chelsea.

“Of course (I understand), we didn’t play with full fight and spirit, like we did against Arsenal,” Fernandes continued. “We missed everything: the fight, the energy and the second balls.

“Very hard to think about the future. One game to try and be good. It is difficult, but it is football; anything can happen.”
