Real Madrid fans ‘hurting’ as Chelsea announce Xabi Alonso as the club’s new manager
Just four months after he was sacked by Real Madrid in January, Xabi Alonso has put pen to paper on a four-year contract with Chelsea – and it has prompted Madrid fans to react.
Alonso received his marching orders in January at Madrid, having been hired the summer beforehand. It comes after a wonderful stint as Bayer Leverkusen manager in Germany, going unbeaten to win the title.

What are you expecting from Alonso’s first season in charge?
Many forget that Alonso actually won 24 of his 34 games in charge as Madrid manager, but it ended with tears. Alonso’s relationship with senior figures broke down, even if Thibaut Courtois denied such rumours.
At the time of Alonso’s sacking, Real Madrid were four points behind Barcelona. They had even beaten Hansi Flick’s side in October 2025, having lost all four El Clasico match-ups during the season beforehand.
Alonso lost his job due to a breakdown in his relationship with the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr. Now, after four months on the sidelines, Alonso has agreed to become Chelsea manager until June 2030.
How Real Madrid fans have reacted to Alonso joining Chelsea
Now, Real Madrid are a whopping 11 points behind Barcelona with two games left. Indeed, Barca have won the league title as Alvaro Arbeloa struggles in interim charge since replacing Alonso in the dugout.
Madrid now realise it wasn’t Alonso that was the problem, but it was that Madrid’s problems were more serious. A lot of Madrid fans would even consider taking Alonso back at Valdebebas if it was an option.
But with Alonso now appointed Chelsea manager and due to start work, Madrid supporters have reacted in their droves. One fan appeared sad to see Alonso move to West London, after being sacked so quickly.
One Madrid supporter posted on X that “great coaches always succeed”, and that Madrid squandered a “great opportunity” that the Spanish giants had with Alonso. Another said Chelsea can win “everything”.
The feeling among Madrid fans continued, with one even saying “we were wrong” to oust Alonso as early as the La Liga giants did. Another said Chelsea have become his “side club” after Alonso was appointed.
Ultimately, Madrid supporters believe Chelsea have made a good appointment and most are wishing him well in the Chelsea hotseat. One, on behalf of Madrid fans, believes Chelsea have made a “wise” decision.

It is incredible that Alonso’s appointment has sparked such optimism among Chelsea fans, less than 24 hours after the Blues had suffered defeat in the FA Cup final. Man City secured a 1-0 win against Chelsea.

On Chelsea’s website, Alonso spoke about a “clear alignment” between himself and Chelsea’s hierarchy. It sounds like Alonso and Chelsea are on the same page; there is hope Alonso can make BlueCo a success.
There is further proof in BlueCo making Alonso a ‘manager’ and not a head coach. BlueCo’s four previous choices in Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior were head coaches.
