Gary Neville explains why Chelsea called Xabi Alonso manager
Football pundit Gary Neville has been explaining why Chelsea have labelled Xabi Alonso manager rather than a head coach.
It’s a real change of tact from what came before Alonso at the club. In fact, I don’t remember the last time they used the term manager rather than head coach. So really, it’s quite a significant upgrade for Alonso, and it really shows just how much they think of their new manager and how much power and say he will be getting at Chelsea compared to what his predecessors had.

Neville has been speaking about it all on his podcast over the weekend, and he believe that Alonso will really be stamping down his authority at Chelsea and making a number of big decisions on things such as who will be sold from the current squad.

In quotes picked up on X today, Neville said:
“I think Alonso will be quite unequivocal with above and say him, him, him and him are gone, and these lot over here I want to stay. He’ll want control and protection, if you sack me within say 2 years then you are going to pay for it heavily financially, Alonso won’t get time so I think what he will have said to them is you need to do what I say, and that’s why they’ve called him manager.”

Xabi Alonso believes the Chelsea squad can be shaped in his image, but a few tweaks will be required according to reports over the weekend.
Chelsea expect to be seriously challenging for the Premier League within three seasons, if not sooner according to reports. Chelsea fans will be demanding it be earlier than three seasons though!
