Chelsea Appoint Xabi Alonso as Liam Rosenior Successor
Chelsea have officially announced Xabi Alonso as their new manager, signing a four-year contract until 2030 and putting an end to weeks of speculation. The west London club released a statement saying the 44-year-old Spaniard will formally start his role at Stamford Bridge on July 1, 2026.
Alonso has an impressive coaching CV, which includes Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen, where he famously led Die Werkself to its first Bundesliga title in the 119-year history of the club. The former Liverpool midfielder oversaw an unbeaten 2023-24 league season in Germany and also won the DFB-Pokal and DFL-Supercup in his transformative spell at the BayArena.
Alonso was the main target for the Blues during the recruitment process and was keen to make the switch to Stamford Bridge. His appointment comes just hours after Chelsea suffered heartbreak in the FA Cup final as Antoine Semenyo scored the only goal in a 1-0 defeat to Manchester City.
Speaking about his decision to join the Blues, Alonso said:
“Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club. From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.
“There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club and it will be my great honour to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies.”
Alonso faces a difficult task at Stamford Bridge after managerial chaos at BlueCo
The Spaniard is the sixth permanent appointment of the BlueCo era, following Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, Enzo Maresca, and, most recently, Liam Rosenior into the increasingly volatile Stamford Bridge hotseat. Chelsea have won six Premier League titles and two Champions League crowns in their history, but their last domestic league title came in 2017, leaving Alonso with an eight-season trophy drought to address.
The 44-year-old masterminded an incredible run at Leverkusen that saw them go 51 games unbeaten in all competitions in 2023-24, including 34 Bundesliga games. His brief stint at Real Madrid also saw encouraging numbers, winning 24 of the 34 games he was in charge before president Florentino Perez decided to make a change in January 2026.
Alonso required guarantees regarding the club’s transfer policy and the power of the manager before signing terms with BlueCo. The Blues will be praying his arrival brings the stability and silverware that have so painfully eluded Stamford Bridge over the last 10 years.
