How Xabi Alonso can beat the problem that sank Ruben Amorim

Chelsea have their man – Xabi Alonso is in place as the new manager. The question is how he is going to set up his team to play, and Sky’s Kaveh Solhekol thinks he has the answer.
“Alonso will not be wedded to playing three at the back at Chelsea,” Solhekol said on Sky Sports yesterday.
“He used that formation at Bayer Leverkusen because it suited the players he had in his squad. He is more than happy to play with a back four. Chelsea will play different formations under him.”

We saw with Ruben Amorim at Manchester United how much of a disaster it was when a coach had a fixed system they were unable to change even when it didn’t suit the squad (or perhaps the league itself).
Let’s hope Alonso is more flexible – the good news is that he has from now until August to think about the group and his plans for them, and he will be able to guide the transfer business this summer accordingly. All of that and a full preseason should be a huge boost for him.
