The brutal Cole Palmer World Cup truth Chelsea fans can’t ignore
Chelsea supporters would have been hoping to see their best players at the World Cup this summer. However, Cole Palmer has not been good enough to earn a place in Thomas Tuchel’s roster.
This is a huge contrast to the feeling of Palmer last summer. Palmer starred for the Blues as they won the Club World Cup last July. He scored twice and made an assist as Chelsea defeated the Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain in the final of the new expanded competition.
Palmer has been Chelsea’s talisman since he arrived at Stamford Bridge in 2023. He was a breath of fresh air after joining from Manchester City, where he was lacking game time. Last weekend, he had the opportunity to get one over his former club in the FA Cup final. However, he failed to make an impact as City won 1-0 and lifted the trophy.
The attacking midfielder has struggled with groin, thigh, and toe problems as well as knocks, which have meant he has played just 32 games this season. He has still managed 10 goals, but has provided just three assists.
Cole Palmer appears burnt out at Chelsea
Palmer has not had a goal involvement in his last six Premier League games. Chelsea plays Tottenham Hotspur tonight in a London derby, but we do not know which Palmer will show up.
Perhaps the freshness of joining Chelsea has worn off Palmer. There have been reports that he is homesick, which led to links to Manchester United. He supported the Red Devils as a boy, and Wayne Rooney was his idol. There have also been reports that Bayern Munich is interested in his services.
Palmer played in just one England game last year as he was always injured when the international breaks came around. However, he did play in both of England’s last two friendly matches against Uruguay and Japan.
The problem Palmer has with England is that he is in a position where Tuchel has the most depth. Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers, Phil Foden, Eberechi Eze, and Morgan Gibbs-White are all competing for the attacking midfield role.
Bellingham can turn a game around in the blink of an eye. Rogers is having a great season with Aston Villa. Foden is hitting form at the right time. Eze could go into the tournament on the back of winning the Premier League and Champions League. Whilst Gibbs-White has been a key part of Nottingham Forest’s survival this campaign.
