All the latest Chelsea transfer news in one place, including updates on Valentin Barco, Joao Pedro and Kendry Paez.
Barco confirms Strasbourg exit
Chelsea-bound midfielder Valentin Barco has announced that he will leave BlueCo sister club Strasbourg this summer.
The Argentina international was tipped to become Liam Rosenior’s first signing after he came over from France, and negotiations became more concrete shortly before the Englishman’s sacking. Chelsea will still proceed with the deal.
Barco will formally be new manager Xabi Alonso’s first signing, even if the Spaniard likely had very little input in the deal. Barco could serve as a replacement for Enzo Fernandez, who continues to be linked with a summer departure.
Alonso’s main priorities
Alonso has three main priorities in the transfer market this summer, CaughtOffside claims.
Chelsea will move away from their policy of almost exclusively targeting young players, which will give Alonso license to bring in more experienced, ready-made stars.
His top target, it is asserted, is a world-class No.9, with Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen again emerging as a leading contender. Alonso will also target an experienced goalkeeper and ball-playing centre-back.
Pedro latest
Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Barcelona have held discussions with Chelsea forward Joao Pedro.
The Brazil international – who will surprisingly not be at the World Cup this summer – has emerged as a top target for the Blaugrana after they cooled their interest in Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez and Man City forward Omar Marmoush.
However, Romano has reiterated that Chelsea view Pedro as a crucial part of their project and do not want to sell. Previous reports claimed that it could require a fee in the region of €100 million to break the Blues’ resolve.
“Although Barcelona have spoken with Pedro’s camp, Chelsea’s position is very clear,” Romano said. “Chelsea consider Pedro an important part of both the present and the future. They want him to remain at the club and believe he can become a crucial player under Alonso.
“Chelsea feel he performed well even during a complicated season and are convinced he can improve even further under the new manager. For this reason, Chelsea are determined to keep him.”
Paez facing scrutiny again
Chelsea loanee Kendry Paez is facing increasing scrutiny for his loan spell at River Plate.
Coach Eduardo Coudet seemingly does not trust the 19-year-old, particularly in high-stakes matches. Paez has not featured in River’s last two playoff games after missing a penalty against San Lorenzo.
The Intransigent reports that the youngster’s post-World Cup future is uncertain. His 18-month loan at River could be cut short after just half a year.
This would continue a worrying pattern, with the Ecuador international previously failing at Strasbourg. He was unable to nail down a starting spot under Rosenior and was harshly criticised – by the coach and the media – for his attitude and off-pitch behaviour.
