Jarrod Bowen responds to criticism from West Ham fans with major admissions

Bowen has carried the Hammers on his back for the last two years.

However, this season – and particularly the last few months when West Ham have had real hope of staying in the Premier League – it has started to show in the skipper’s tired and worryingly worsening performances.

Noise around his leadership – or lack of it – has grown louder among Hammers fans of late as West Ham look nailed on for relegation.

Bowen is fully aware of the criticism from supporters.

Because he has responded to it in a TV interview with Sky Sports, making major admissions in the process.

West Ham’s Prague hero has conceded he has not played well enough this season.

And Bowen has also admitted he has made mistakes as captain.

But he insists he has always given his all and has seen being West Ham captain as a ‘huge honour’.

He says the role comes with added pressure, responsibility and being blamed by fans.

And the Hammers ace has told supporters he is ‘only human’ as speculation swirls that he will be leaving the Hammers if they are relegated to the Championship.

Bowen admits he has not been good enough for West Ham and has made mistakes as captain

“To captain the football club is a huge honour, let’s not get away from that,” Bowen told Sky Sports.

“It’s still the biggest honour anyone can have in their careers. Of course that comes with extra responsibility, extra questions to be answered and people pointing the finger at you.

“I’ve been here six years now, I think I understand how this club works, how they (West Ham fans) want their players to play, how they want their team to play.

“So for me I just try and be the best version of me. I’ve said it a couple of times in interviews, I get things wrong as captain, I’m only human.

“I won’t play as well as I like in some weeks, which is normal. I think from where I’ve been people expect you to almost score every week or do something every week.

“That’s what I try to do but sometimes it doesn’t hit those heights and you’ve got to be brave enough, it’s easy when things are going well and you take the plaudits and different things but I think you really learn about yourself when the fingers are being pointed and the questions are being asked.

“In my career I always want to look back at it and have no ‘what ifs’ no regrets, ‘I wish I’d have done that different’. Obviously the situation has not been great this season and I haven’t played to the standards I know I can but I’m big enough to accept that I just haven’t played well enough.”

Bowen has been linked with a plethora of clubs with the Hammers on the brink of the drop.

Chelsea, Newcastle, Man United and Liverpool have all been credited with genuine interest in the Hammers skipper.

On the flip side, some reports have also claimed Bowen is open to staying and helping West Ham bounce straight back.
