Enzo Maresca wants to sign Chelsea player for Manchester City
While nothing is official yet, it is pretty much an open secret that Enzo Maresca will be replacing Pep Guardiola as the manager of Manchester City this summer. Having worked as the Spaniard’s assistant in the past, this job might have been on the Italian’s radar for a long time, even while he was still coaching Chelsea. And this information does make you look at this Stamford Bridge walkout a bit differently.
Anyways, it is not hard to see why Maresca might have wanted the Man City job. The club have proven to be a consistent success for the past decade and a half. Chelsea, on the other hand, have been a shadow of themselves since the BlueCo takeover.
Maresca becoming Man City manager will give Chelsea a few things to worry about. One of them would be the Italian manager returning to try and sign his favourite players from Stamford Bridge.
According to Sport Witness, journalist Gustavo Yarroch said on ESPN Argentina:
“In England, there are increasingly strong rumours that after the World Cup, Pep Guardiola could leave his position.
“If that were to happen, and Enzo Maresca arrived as Manchester City manager, he also has Enzo Fernández on his radar.”
Enzo Fernandez’s Chelsea future remains up in the air
At one point, not too long ago, it had looked like it was all but certain that Fernandez would be on his way out of Chelsea this summer. He had refused to rule out an exit when talking after the PSG defeat, and then mentioned Madrid as the city he wanted to live in someday in a more casual interview later.
Since then, the noise around Fernandez’s potential exit has gone away for the most part. But that does not mean that he is certain to remain.
That situation might have just been swept under the rug for the rest of the season before it re-emerges in the summer. And if it does, Manchester City look set to be in the mix.
Maresca helped transform Fernandez’s game
Let’s not forget, it was under Maresca that Fernandez’s game transformed. For his first 18 months at Chelsea, the Argentine had not really met expectations at Stamford Bridge.
He had been someone who had great games here and there, like the opening day display vs Liverpool. But for the most part, he was not making enough of an impact on games. He seemed to struggle with the pace of the Premier League.
Under Maresca, he would develop into a box-crashing midfielder and the stats tell their own story since then. Chelsea cannot afford to lose Fernandez, but his former manager might come calling soon.
