Jamie Carragher explains ‘big mistake’ Nuno cannot make when West Ham face Leeds

West Ham United need to beat Leeds while hoping that Tottenham slip to a devastating loss against a badly out-of-form Everton.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher watched on as Newcastle cruised past Nuno Espirito Santo’s side last time out, recording a comfortable 3-1 victory at St James’ Park.

And speaking during Sky Sports’ pre-match build up, Carragher feels that Nuno must learn from the mistakes he made in the North East. An injury-hit Leeds, at home, is about as ‘winnable’ a fixture as the Hammers could realistically hope for in their situation.

“I hope he goes back to the approach he was using in the last couple of months that have served him so well,” said the 2005 Champions League winner. “I was so surprised how they set up away at Newcastle with the three at the back.

Jean-Clair Todibo struggled badly alongside Axel Disasi and Konstantinos Mavropanos away to Newcastle. Carragher could see the logic of starting three centre-halves against the likes of Arsenal and Man City (a narrow 1-0 defeat and a valiant 1-1 draw) but not against Eddie Howe’s underachieving Newcastle.

“I understood going to Arsenal with a back three; I think most people would understand that going up against the best team in the country. But to do that at Newcastle, with so little time before the end of the season when you need to win, I thought that was a big mistake from the manager,” Carragher adds.

“I expect to see him go back to what West Ham have been doing really well in that 4-4-2.

“Even though you would rather be in Tottenham’s position, West Ham know they have to win. They have to try and score early. The West Ham crowd will be right up for this. It needs a strong start.

“Forget that they are playing a promoted team – Leeds are really good and look like they have been in the Premier League for four or five years. They have to start quick and put the pressure on Leeds, use the atmosphere here. The fans coming here, it’s hope rather than belief.

“When you look at West Ham all season, they’ve been really poor. Three wins in the first 23—that’s why they will go down if it happens.”

Everton boss David Moyes could enhance his West Ham legend by sending Tottenham into the Championship while saving his former employers in the process. Spurs have lost six home matches in 2026, compared to West Ham’s one.

And Gary Neville, an eight-time Premier League champion with Manchester United, cannot help but feel that the sight of countless expectant supporters greeting them at the gate will only increase the burden on the shoulders of those Tottenham players.

“There’s a lot of nervousness around here today,” Neville said on the touchline at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. “I feel it’s going to be an uncomfortable day.

“The problem is when you’ve got such a poor home record, you start to remember how you’ve been here all season. I can’t see it being easy for Tottenham at all. Everton will be relaxed; David Moyes is an experienced operator.

“There is some experience in that Tottenham team and, my goodness, they are going to need that. I think it’s going to be really, really uncomfortable. There are fans in their thousands welcoming that coach into the stadium; I’m not sure that will help the Tottenham players.

“Obviously, if West Ham are losing 2-0, it will filter through in a very positive way. But if West Ham score, it will filter through in a negative way and make this atmosphere even more eerie.

“They deserve this, Tottenham, for every decision they’ve made over the last couple of seasons,” Neville adds of a side who find themselves dreaming of a 17th-place finish for a second successive campaign. “Where they have been in the league has been an absolute disgrace. They’ve let every one of these 60,000 fans down for a long time now and they could get their comeuppance on the pitch.

“They are not good enough to be able to dictate that they are going to get a draw out of the match. This Spurs team can’t manage a game well. They don’t have a clue what’s going to happen from one minute to the next. They’ve just got to go for it.”
