On this day in 1974, a momentous event unfolded in English football history during a match between Manchester City and Manchester United. Denis Law, a former Manchester United player, scored a back-heel goal for Manchester City against his old club. This goal was significant as it contributed to Manchester United’s relegation from the First Division. The match, held at Old Trafford, ended with Law’s goal as the only score, sealing a 1-0 victory for Manchester City. The game was later abandoned due to a pitch invasion by fans, but the result was allowed to stand. This match marked the end of Denis Law’s League football career, as he was substituted immediately after scoring and did not play in the League again.

Fast forward to 1985, another notable incident occurred in English football, this time involving Chelsea Football Club. Following a pitch invasion at Stamford Bridge in March 1985, the Football Association issued a warning to the club. In response, Chelsea’s controversial chairman, Ken Bates, proposed an extraordinary measure to prevent future invasions: the installation of a 12-foot high electrified fence around the pitch. This proposal was set to be implemented during the First Division fixture between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur on 27th April 1985.
However, the plan faced significant opposition. Just days before the match, the Greater London Council intervened, threatening legal action if the electrified fence was activated. This led to widespread speculation and debate about whether the fence would be switched on during the match. Ultimately, the electrified fence was not activated, and the plan was never put into action. The match proceeded without incident, and the controversial proposal was shelved permanently.
