Mariona Caldentey pulled the strings as Spain rose to the top of FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying Group C with style on Friday.
Our Spanish midfielder provided the assists for Spain’s first two goals of the 4-0 win over England, scored by Patricia Guijarro and Alexia Putellas.
The latter got her second after half-time and Claudia Pina made it four on home soil to go level on points with England, but ahead on goal difference.
Mariona played 85 minutes of the match, having done a great job in midfield, while Lotte Wubben-Moy got 84 minutes for the Lionesses and Alessia Russo played the full 90.
Chloe Kelly came off the bench in the 59th minute.
Elsewhere in World Cup qualifying, Smilla Holmberg and Stina Blackstenius played 90 and 83 minutes respectively of Sweden’s 2-1 defeat away to Denmark on Friday.
That loss left Sweden third in Group A with seven points, one point behind Italy – who they face on Tuesday – and four shy of Denmark.
At youth level, Laila Harbert came off the bench to score a 90th-minute winner for England under-20s in their 1-0 friendly win over Canada in Pinatar. Cecily Wellesley-Smith also came on in the 63rd minute, while Jessie Gale played 76 minutes and and Vivienne Lia came on for the final 14.
