Chelsea signed Brazil star, European Championship winner and Barcelona ace as free agents

Chelsea have never been reluctant to spend heavily in the transfer market. The Blues were renowned for their hefty expenditure during the Roman Abramovich years, and that approach has persisted under BlueCo and Todd Boehly.
The new ownership has spent roughly £1.5billion on transfers as of last summer, and that trend has continued into 2026 following the arrivals of Marco Palestra from Atalanta and Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg.
Xabi Alonso is the figure now tasked with bringing cohesion to the current squad. He has become the fourth manager to take control since January and will face a significant challenge in enhancing the performances of previous signings.

Further investment is expected to follow, though it’s far from the only method the Blues have historically employed to assemble squads. Here, Mirror Football examine three free agent captures to have arrived at Stamford Bridge.
Ruud Gullit
Chelsea secured a Ballon d’Or winner in Gullit, who had enjoyed considerable domestic success with Feyenoord, PSV and AC Milan. Gullit joined the Blues on a free transfer from Sampdoria and brought a wealth of experience, having also guided the Netherlands to the Euro 1988 trophy as captain.
He claimed the Serie A crown three times and secured two European trophies in 1989 and 1990. Gullit’s time concentrating exclusively on midfield lasted just a year at Stamford Bridge, as he moved into a player-manager role after Glenn Hoddle’s exit to take charge of England.
The Dutch icon ended Chelsea’s barren run by guiding them to FA Cup glory in 1997, representing their first silverware in 26 years. He featured 64 times and found the net seven times, claiming the League Cup 12 months later before leaving London for Newcastle to take up their managerial position.
Although his spell at Chelsea ended on a disappointing note, Gullit maintains a positive view of his time at the club. He said: “I felt that living in England enriched my experiences in life, and enhanced my ideas about football. I still feel the same way.
“I am very proud I was there at the start for Chelsea, and to see what the Premier League has become too. Both have moved on so much, they are unrecognisable. But they had to start somewhere.”
Thiago Silva
Thiago Silva proved a dependable free signing for the Blues, initially joining in 2020 and remaining at Stamford Bridge for four seasons. Frank Lampard secured the seasoned defender on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain.
The Brazilian had enjoyed domestic success at PSG and AC Milan but had never claimed the Champions League with either side. He fulfilled his ambition in his maiden season with the Blues, securing the European trophy under Thomas Tuchel.
Silva remained at Chelsea for three further years, racking up 155 appearances and becoming the first defender since John Terry in 2006 to claim the Player of the Year award in 2023. He rejoined Fluminense in 2024, then moved to Porto to capture the league title, before heading back to Brazil earlier this summer.
Winston Bogarde
Winston Bogarde is regarded as one of Chelsea’s most disappointing free agent signings after he struggled to make his mark in Spain and England following a Champions League triumph with Ajax. He was mentored by Louis van Gaal in the Netherlands and the manager brought him to Barcelona in 1998.
Yet injuries and Van Gaal’s waning influence meant that Bogarde was looking elsewhere due to his difficulties in the Barca backline. He signed for the Blues in 2000, with Gianluca Vialli securing him just a week before his own sacking.
Bogarde failed to leave his mark during four fruitless years at Stamford Bridge. He managed just 12 outings, totalling 548 minutes and insisted that Chelsea’s financial problems prevented him from pushing through a loan switch or permanent exit.
In a 2015 interview with The Guardian, he explained: “Vialli bought me and when I had been there a week he got sacked. You have to look who the new manager’s going to be and if you’re still going to get a chance.
“They had to cut costs. My situation was not very good and we tried to solve it many ways. Like to maybe go on loan or sell me, or whatever. But in the end it didn’t work out.”
