Enzo Fernandez discusses Chelsea future for first time since Real Madrid bombshell

Enzo Fernandez has spoken out about his Chelsea future following Argentina’s recent World Cup win over Egypt.

The 2022 world champions came close to crashing out of this summer’s tournament after trailing Mo Salah’s Egypt 2-0 with just 11 minutes to play.

Cristian Romero and Lionel Messi dragged the South Americans back into the game before Fernandez scored the winner deep in injury time.

The Chelsea midfielder’s last gasp heroics inspired jubilant scenes after the match, and Fernandez was quickly asked about his club future.

Speaking to the media (via the Standard) after the match, Fernandez said: “I’m not thinking about my future right no.

“I’m here living this moment which is incredible for me and we’ll see after the World Cup.”

After being so heavily linked with Real Madrid, and clearly wanting to move to the Spanish capital, Fernandez was left red-faced after Los Blancos recently released a statement confirming the have no intention of signing the midfielder.

The 15-time UEFA Champions League winners said: “In light of the reports and statements that have appeared in recent days regarding an alleged interest from Real Madrid CF in the player Enzo Fernandez, the club wishes to state that it has not made any effort, either direct or indirect, to sign the aforementioned player and, likewise, has no intention of undertaking such an operation.”

And with a contract until 2032, and the Blues demanding at least £120 million, Fernandez is in a tricky spot so may be forced to admit defeat in his push to leave Stamford Bridge this summer.

New contract has always been the objective

Undoubtedly aware there are very few clubs in the world who can afford him, and even fewer who actually need him, Fernandez’s efforts to pressure Chelsea clearly stem from wanting a new, and improved, contract.

The 25-year-old is already one of the Blues’ highest paid players earning £180,000 per week. Only Wesley Fofana and captain Reece James are on higher salaries.

If Chelsea are to offer the Argentine a new deal, he will need to prove he is capable of being the side’s best performer week in, week out, and that is something that fans have yet to see since he arrived from Benfica three years ago.

Of course, winning back-to-back World Cups with Argentina would help the midfielder’s cause and could persuade Chelsea to tie him down on improved terms.

Time will tell.
