Jesse Derry set for Chelsea exit after renewal – Three English clubs miss out
Chelsea appear to have settled on the next step in Jesse Derry’s development, with reports from Portugal now claiming the teenager is heading for Sporting CP on loan after agreeing a new long-term contract at Stamford Bridge.
Record reports the 19-year-old has agreed to join the Portuguese champions on a season-long deal after recently renewing his Chelsea contract.
The newspaper says Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth and Southampton were all monitoring the England youth international, but Sporting have won the race after deciding to accelerate their pursuit of a player they had been tracking for several months.
The update comes less than 24 hours after To Ball reported Chelsea were moving to tie Derry down to a new deal following interest from Sporting, Juventus and Bayern Munich.
According to that report, the growing interest in the winger prompted the Blues to move quickly to secure his long-term future.
If the latest claims prove accurate, Chelsea’s contract renewal and the loan move have become part of the same plan, allowing the club to protect one of their brightest young talents before sending him out for regular senior football.
Chelsea loan plan revealed
According to Record, Chelsea’s decision reflects the fierce competition Derry faces for attacking places at Stamford Bridge.
The report points to the presence of Pedro Neto, Alejandro Garnacho, Estêvão, Cole Palmer, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, Tyrique George and Ryan Kavuma-McQueen as reasons why regular first-team football would be difficult to secure this season.
A move to Sporting would instead offer Derry the opportunity to compete for major honours while also playing Champions League football. Record suggests that prospect appealed to the youngster as he weighed up his next step.
Sporting had already identified Derry as a target before deciding to move now, partly to strengthen a position they have been looking to improve throughout the summer.
The Portuguese champions also value his versatility, with the right-footed winger comfortable operating on either flank despite predominantly playing from the left.
Should the deal go through, Derry would become Sporting’s sixth signing of the summer.
Rapid rise after Chelsea switch
Derry’s progress over the past year has been rapid. After joining Chelsea from Crystal Palace, the winger enjoyed an impressive first season in west London, scoring 12 goals and providing four assists in 30 appearances across the club’s U21 and U19 sides.
Those performances earned him three appearances for the senior team. He made his debut under Liam Rosenior in Chelsea’s 4-0 League Cup victory over Hull City before featuring again in domestic cup competition and making his Premier League debut against Nottingham Forest.
His development has also continued on the international stage with England’s U19 side, further strengthening his reputation as one of Chelsea’s most promising academy prospects.
For now, Chelsea have made no public announcement on either the reported contract extension or the proposed loan move.
However, Portuguese reports now confirm the Blues have responded to growing interest from across Europe by securing Derry’s future before giving him the opportunity to gain valuable senior experience away from Stamford Bridge.
