Chelsea could be set for huge Alejandro Garnacho loss after £14.5m blow laid bare

Chelsea are open to offers for winger Alejandro Garnacho in the summer transfer window after a disappointing debut season at Stamford Bridge for the former Manchester United man

Chelsea paid Manchester United £40million for the services of Alejandro Garnacho less than 12 months ago – a fee the Blues believed to be modest in today’s market.

A fee the west Londoners believed would not be too difficult to get back if Garnacho was not able to live up to expectations at Stamford Bridge. After just one season at Chelsea, the club are prepared to listen to offers for the former United winger.

As exclusively revealed earlier this week on football.london the Blues will only consider permanent offers for the 22-year-old, who is reportedly subject to loan interest from multiple clubs in Italy this summer. Are Chelsea, though, able to get their money back – or even return a profit – on Garnacho?

If Transfermarkt’s valuation tool is anything to go by, then Chelsea could be set for a swift £14.5m loss on Garnacho. After a season consisting of just the single Premier League goal, the Argentine’s value has dropped from €45m (£38.4m) to €28m (£23.9m).

Though, it seems unlikely Chelsea would accept anything around the £23.9m-mark given less than 12 months have passed since they paid £40m for his signature. With Chelsea’s stance: buy him or he stays, it will be intriguing to see, if it ends up being the latter, the role Garnacho will have in Xabi Alonso’s squad.

That, of course, depends on the system Alonso will use at Stamford Bridge. The tactically-fluid Spaniard will have a few tricks up his sleeve but if he ends up opting with the 3-4-2-1 he used during his most successful time as a coach at Bayer Leverkusen, then where does that leave Garnacho?

On the left-hand side of that team was Florian Wirtz; and he was more of a left-sided No.10 rather than an out-and-out winger. Stamford Bridge sources told football.london earlier in the year that the Blues want to sign a versatile attacking option. This is pure speculation, but perhaps someone who can play as a left-sided wide option and in a more central No.10 role.

Chelsea have signed Geovany Quenda, who has been doing individual work at the club’s training base in Cobham prior to the first-team squad returning later this week, from Sporting CP this summer and the versatile Portuguese youngster is able to play on the left-hand side of attack.
