Manchester United have reached an agreement to sign Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos in a deal valued at £50million, as Michael Carrick prepares to confirm his first signing in charge. Express Sport understands that Santos is poised to make a permanent switch to Old Trafford after negotiations between United and Chelsea progressed significantly over the past 48 hours.

United have committed to an initial fee of £48m, with a further £2m potentially payable in add-ons. Personal terms between the club and the player have already been agreed. As part of the arrangement, a 10 per cent sell-on clause has been written into the contract, ensuring Chelsea will receive a share of any future transfer fee. His wages remain unclear but the contract will last until June 2031 and Santos will sign his deal tomorrow (Thursday).

Carrick appears set to land his target to partner Ederson in the centre of midfield, with the Brazilian international due to arrive from Atalanta following the conclusion of the World Cup.

Whether his anticipated arrival will dampen United’s reported pursuit of Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni remains to be seen.

Santos, meanwhile, has been given the green light to travel to Manchester to undergo a medical and is now on the verge of completing his move to Old Trafford.

The 22-year-old, the first acquisition of Todd Boehly’s tenure at Stamford Bridge, looks set to fill the gap left by Casemiro following the expiry of his contract on 30th June.

The Brazilian midfielder was a squad rotation option under both Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior last term, making 42 appearances for Chelsea.

It marked his first complete campaign in England following inconsistent loan stints with Nottingham Forest and RC Strasbourg.

Santos featured in Carlo Ancelotti’s provisional 55-man World Cup selection for Brazil in June.

Yet he was left out when the roster was trimmed to 26 players, though Ederson received an emergency call-up following Wesley’s injury just days before the tournament commenced.

He has enjoyed a period of recuperation ahead of pre-season getting underway, which will provide Carrick with a welcome lift as he looks to finalise another acquisition before their warm-up matches in Finland, Norway, Sweden and Ireland.
