He did that while carrying a massive defensive workload in a struggling transition system. Add three goals and two assists from 10 Champions League matches, and it’s a stellar individual return for a player stuck in a side that finished 10th. He was easily the best player in a squad that failed to secure European football.

Is he good enough for Real Madrid? Obviously. The real issue is whether Madrid are telling the truth or just playing a game of poker to drive down the price. Mourinho is under serious pressure. Los Blancos finished eight points behind Barcelona in La Liga, got knocked out of the Copa del Rey in the last 16 by Albacete, and fell to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals. They need a rebuild, and fast. Sources close to the Spanish giants insist a midfielder is required, and Fernández has been top of the list for months. Teams rarely publish formal denials unless the background noise is causing them a massive headache.

New manager Xabi Alonso officially took the reins at Chelsea on 1 July, inheriting a messy situation. Without European football, replacing a player of Fernández’s calibre is going to be incredibly difficult. He’s 25, under contract until 2032, and picking up £180,000 a week. He has also made it clear he wants the Bernabéu. Keeping an unhappy player who has publicly flirted with another club is a massive risk, but selling him cheap is worse.

The plot thickens. Italian transfer reporter Gianluigi Longari states that Arsenal and Manchester City have now entered the frame, monitoring the situation after Madrid’s public rejection. Letting him join a domestic rival would be PR suicide for Chelsea. Watching him line up at the Emirates or the Etihad is a completely different prospect from seeing him move to Spain.

If Madrid refuse to match that £120 million valuation, Chelsea must dig their heels in. Even if Fernández decides to sulk through pre-season training, Alonso needs to show some authority. Losing your best midfielder to a Premier League rival because of an official statement from Spain makes zero sense.
