Chelsea paying full salary as youngster flies to Portugal – No purchase option included
Chelsea have made their intentions with Jesse Derry unmistakably clear after agreeing to send the teenager to Sporting on loan.
Portuguese newspaper To Ball reports the 19-year-old has completed a season-long move to the Portuguese club. This comes after he first signed a new Chelsea contract until 2032.
Crucially, the agreement contains no option for Sporting to buy the winger permanently, underlining the Blues’ belief in his long-term future. And Chelsea will cover his full salary throughout the 2026/27 season.
According to the report, Sporting will strengthen their squad without paying a transfer fee or taking on the player’s salary. With those terms, Chelsea retain full control over one of their most highly-rated young attackers.
Chelsea protect another young talent
Derry had been on Sporting’s radar for several months before the Portuguese club decided to press ahead with negotiations.
A Bola says Chelsea’s strong institutional relationship with Sporting helped smooth discussions between the two clubs. It was strengthened by the recent transfers of Geovany Quenda and Dário Essugo to Stamford Bridge.
The Blues were unwilling to compromise on the most important part of the agreement, however. Despite Sporting’s interest, Chelsea refused to include any purchase option. They preferred to monitor the winger’s progress in a league they believe is well suited to accelerating his development.
Derry first committed his future to Chelsea by signing until 2032 before receiving the opportunity to play regular senior football elsewhere.
Defined role in Portugal
Although Derry arrives with considerable promise, A Bola reports he is initially expected to serve as Sporting’s second-choice option on the left wing. He is not expected to walk straight into the starting XI.
The Portuguese club still expect to recruit another winger once Pedro Gonçalves’ anticipated departure is completed, with that sale viewed internally as the move that will unlock further spending during the window.
Derry is expected in Lisbon immediately before joining Sporting’s pre-season training camp in the Algarve.
So the new contract until 2032, no purchase option and a commitment to cover the player’s wages all point to a development loan, not the first step towards a permanent exit.
