World Cup Boss’ Job ‘Not in Jeopardy’ Despite Elimination

Brazil’s performance at the 2026 World Cup was little more than a catastrophe. Despite entering the tournament with plenty of hype behind them, they exited the competition in the last 16 after being defeated by Norway.

There was speculation as to where head coach Carlo Ancelloti’s future might lie – but a recent article from Foot Mercato seems to indicate that the Italian will stay where he is for the forseeable future.

First of all, Ancelotti still has four years remaining on his existing contract – as such, sacking him would be an expense that the Brazilian FA would rather avoid.

Additionally, several current Brazil players have requested that Ancelotti keep his post – clearly, he still has the support of the dressing room.

Should Carlo Ancelotti stay in place as Brazil manager?

Previously, at club level, Ancelotti has generally been a major success. In the Premier League, he has managed Chelsea and Everton – at Stamford Bridge, he won both the Premier League title and the FA Cup within a single season.

As well as this, he has also won five Champions League trophies, two at AC Milan and three at Real Madrid. However, this has been his first gig as an international head coach – understandably, he has faced some teething troubles.

Often, Brazil looked wildly disorganised, especially so when out of possession. They left gaps all over the pitch, leading them to concede plenty of unnecessary goals against teams they really should’ve beaten.

However, player for player, Brazil’s 2026 World Cup squad was among the weaker Brazil teams from across history. Vinicius Junior had a fine tournament, but many of his cohorts failed to meet the required standard, despite their undeniable pedigree.

What has been said by former players and coaches?

Brazil’s lacklustre display at the World Cup has not gone down favourably with some of their former players – and nor has the suggestion that Ancelotti will remain in his post for the time being.

In particular, former Brazil star Romario was furious with Brazil’s performance, letting his feelings be known. Additionally, ex-Brazil coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo was equally displeased.

In an expletive-laden rant, Romario satated: “I would have torn up his contract.There’s no way Ancelotti is staying on as coach of the Brazilian national team after this fiasco (if I was in charge), this disgrace he’s caused.

I told you this in the three previous shows, and I’ll say it again here. It’s unacceptable, it has to change. It can’t go on like this, damn it! We had Dunga, he lost and he left.

“We had Felipão (Scolari), who won the cup and he stayed on. We had Tite, who lost, he stayed on, and he lost again. “Now we have that damn Ancelotti, who has lost and who will continue to do so.”

Meanwhile, Luxemburgo said: “If he (Ancelotti) were a Brazilian coach, the press would already be calling for his head. We don’t have better players than Neymar. Any national team in the world would protect a player like him.”
