Chelsea’s transfer stance over Enzo Fernandez sale after £50m deal agreed

Andrey Santos is on his way to Manchester United while Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez continues to be linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge this summer

Andrey Santos will have his medical at Manchester United today (Thursday) ahead of signing a five-year contract at Old Trafford.

The 22-year-old midfielder is set to sign for the Red Devils after the Manchester-based club reached an agreement over a £50million package (£48m up-front fee plus £2m in add-ons) with Chelsea earlier in the week. Santos informed the Blues of his desire to leave Stamford Bridge this summer with concerns over where his game time will come from next term.

Santos was in and out of the Chelsea starting line-up last season and with Moises Caicedo, one of the club’s prized assets, signing a new long-term contract towards the end of the 2025/26 campaign, the Brazilian midfielder considered his future. United’s interest, sources say, has been there for a while and this summer, following the departure of Casemiro, Michael Carrick’s team decided to act on it.

As for Chelsea, the west London club will now consider their options in the transfer market when it comes to adding a new central midfielder. Valentin Barco is expected to arrive from Strasbourg, with official confirmation from the club’s side likely to come after the World Cup has concluded.

Enzo Fernandez’s future remains up in the air. The 25-year-old wants to move to Real Madrid, sources with knowledge of the situation say, and there was interest earlier in the summer from the Spanish club. However, earlier this month, Los Blancos released a bombshell statement where they claimed to have “no intention” of pursuing a move for the Chelsea midfielder in the summer transfer window.

Fernandez refused to clarify his future earlier this week in the immediate aftermath of his match-winning heroics in Argentina’s World Cup last-16 victory over Egypt. Chelsea sources are not panicking over the situation and are relaxed in their approach – which has been, all the way through, that the Argentine midfielder is available for £120m if any club is willing to pay that.

If not, then Fernandez will remain a Chelsea player next season. If Fernandez does leave, then that will see the Blues have a lot of money to play with in the transfer market and that would change the situation entirely. Either way, Chelsea are considering their options when it comes to adding a new central midfielder before the end of the summer transfer window.
