Andrey Santos to Manchester United: Manchester United have struck a £50 million agreement with Chelsea to sign Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos, Sky Sports reports. The structure is straightforward, £48m guaranteed with £2m in conditional add-ons, and Chelsea retain a 10 per cent sell-on clause. Santos, 22, is preparing to undergo his medical with Michael Carrick’s side, with the transfer now firmly in its final stages.

What the numbers actually say about the Brazilian

A quick glance at his stats from last season might not blow you away. He made 27 Premier League appearances, scored once, and played 1,255 minutes. But context matters here. Santos only started 13 league games for Chelsea, mostly coming off the bench because Enzo Fernández and Moisés Caicedo are almost impossible to drop right now.

Look back a bit further to his loan spell at Strasbourg. That is where you see what he can really do. He played 32 games in Ligue 1, scoring 10 goals and setting up another three. The talent is obviously there when he gets regular minutes.

According to WhoScored, his main strengths are tackling and blocking shots, but he is also strong in the air and uses the ball well. Crucially, he is disciplined, committing under one foul per game. Carrick gets a tough, smart midfielder who can easily cover two or three different roles across the centre of the pitch. He already has eight senior caps for Brazil, and even though he missed out on Carlo Ancelotti’s squad for the recent World Cup, people in South America still rate him incredibly highly.

Chelsea’s decision to sell comes down to a harsh squad reality. Caicedo recently signed a long-term contract extension, and Fernández is a permanent fixture in their starting eleven. Santos simply could not see a clear way into the first team at Stamford Bridge. At 22, he wants to be the main defensive midfielder for his country, and you cannot do that while sitting on a substitute bench in West London.

United are not stopping here either, with a separate £38m deal for Atalanta’s Éderson close to completion. Spending £88m on two players completely alters the look of their midfield, just as Champions League football returns to Old Trafford. Santos gives Carrick a profile he simply did not have last year: youth, defensive awareness, and raw energy.
