Mike Penders’ World Cup campaign is over after Belgium suffered a late 2-1 quarter-final defeat by Spain in Los Angeles.

The Chelsea goalkeeper was named among the substitutes again, with Thibaut Courtois starting in goal for Belgium.

Spain led through Fabian Ruiz after 30 minutes, before Charles De Ketelaere headed Belgium level before half-time. The game looked to be heading towards extra time until Mikel Merino scored from close range in the 88th minute.

Courtois had gone off injured shortly before the winner, but Penders did not come on. The stadium scoreboard briefly showed the Chelsea keeper’s name, only for Senne Lammens to replace the Real Madrid goalkeeper instead.

Penders Still Gains Valuable Belgium Experience

Penders will naturally have wanted minutes, especially after Courtois’ injury briefly opened the door late in the game.

Even so, this was still a useful tournament for a young goalkeeper trying to build his senior profile.

Chelsea’s official tournament guide confirmed Penders was the club’s sole Belgium representative at the World Cup, while he spent last season on loan at Strasbourg. That route has already given him senior football, and a deep Belgium camp adds another layer to his development.

The wider Chelsea interest in the tournament remains alive. Spain now face Malo Gusto’s France in Tuesday’s semi-final, while Marc Cucurella is also still involved with La Roja.
