Chelsea have told Roma that they will have a free run to sign Strasbourg wingback Diego Moreira this summer, according to reports in the Italian media.
The Belgian had an impressive season in France, having scored 5 goals and provided 9 assists in 42 appearances. He was subsequently rewarded with a place in Belgium’s World Cup squad.
Moreira was sold by Chelsea to Strasbourg for €8.5m two years ago, and Gazzetta dello Sport claim they retain a “buyback clause” on the player.
The newspaper say that Roma are interested in the Belgian international, but they were concerned that the Blues would look to bring the player back to Stamford Bridge.
However, Xabi Alonso’s side have “made it clear they are not interested” in re-signing Moreira, leaving the path clear for him to make the move to Serie A instead.
Chavarria is the club’s top priority
Moreira would have been a good fit for Alonso’s 3-4-3 system, having been mostly deployed as a left wingback by Strasbourg over the past two seasons, but Journal claim that Alonso has prioritised a move for Rayo Vallecano’s Pep Chavarria instead.
After having an opening bid rejected for the 28-year-old, they are expected to return with another offer soon.

It is believed that the Giallorossi have enquired about the availability of Alejandro Garnacho. The Argentinian international is reportedly on the market less than a year after his arrival from Manchester United.
Moreira does play in similar positions to Garnacho, but it appears that Roma see him as an alternative to Marseille’s Mason Greenwood, who looks set to join Fenerbahce.
