Chelsea Make Fresh Contact Over England U21 Winger in Summer Push: Reports
Chelsea have put England Under-21 international Jonathan Rowe back on their shortlist. The London club and Rowe’s camp are said to have talked again in the last few days.
The Englishman is one of a number of wingers being looked at, including West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville and Francisco Trincão. No formal offer has been lodged yet. So this is still a scanning exercise at this point, not a done deal.
Rowe had an excellent end to last season, scoring goals and creating others all the way through Serie A and Bologna’s runs in the European and cup competitions. The Norwich academy graduate has scored eight goals and provided four assists in 42 appearances in all competitions this season.
His life appears to have been that of a lost traveller who has finally found his way. He stayed just one season in France before leaving Marseille for Bologna for €17 million. The Serie A side value him at around €40–45 million and are not interested in selling unless they get a good offer. He has a contract until 2029.
Chelsea are still struggling to find a left winger even after signing two last summer. Rowe plays on the left-wing usually so he can cut in on his strong right foot. This is a position that Chelsea has struggled all season.
The Rivals After Rowe And Bologna’s Price Tag
There are a lot of big clubs interested in the deal, and Chelsea are one of them. Manchester United will likely be very competitive as they have sent a lot of scouts to watch the player. Another Premier League side looking to bolster their attacking options are Aston Villa, buoyed by their exploits in Europe.
It is also important to remember Galatasaray. The Turkish giants complete the picture by offering Rowe the chance to play in the Champions League and a big pay rise that could double his current salary.
Meanwhile, all the noise surrounding Bologna’s prized asset hasn’t stopped the club from standing their ground. The Rossoblù can afford to think seriously about Rowe’s departure, but any sale will depend on the offers received. Anyone who wants him this summer will have to be prepared to dig deep into their pockets.
