Xabi Alonso wants Chelsea to sign Real Madrid star to bolster squad
Xabi Alonso has reportedly asked Chelsea to sign Real Madrid defender Alvaro Carreras as he looks to strengthen his squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
Chelsea have been left short of options at left-back after Marc Cucurella joined Real Madrid on a permanent transfer last month. Cucurella was a key player for the Blues last season, although they had a campaign to forget.
Thanks for the submission!
According to Sport NewspaperAlonso has requested a replacement for Cucurella and asked Chelsea to make enquiries about Carreras. While Carreras had a far-from-impressive second half of the 2025/26 season, Alonso remains a huge admirer of the player.
The report adds that the west London club already have an offer of €25 million for Carreras rejected by Los Blancos, who value the defender at €50 million, the amount they signed him from Benfica last summer.
The Blues are reportedly aware of Real Madrid’s stance and might consider it, provided that Alonso can assure Carreras a guaranteed starting position at Stamford Bridge.
Carreras enjoyed ample playing time during Alonso’s brief spell as Los Blancos’ head coach, racking up 2,151 minutes in 25 appearances across all competitions.
Amid Alonso’s reported interest and Carreras falling down the pecking order, it is understood that Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho considers the 23-year-old important to his squad.
The Spanish outlet had earlier reported that Chelsea were exploring a move for Carreras, but the Spanish giants would not let him go unless they recouped part of their investment.
Carreras came through the ranks at Real Madrid and returned to the club in the summer of 2025. His current contract with the Whites, however, runs until 2031.
