Man Utd set for double payday after Alejandro Garnacho as transfer ‘agreed’

Manchester United could be in line for a second lucrative sell-on windfall from Alejandro Garnacho’s potential Chelsea departure, following Mason Greenwood’s possible switch to Fenerbahce. Garnacho has found life difficult since making the move to Stamford Bridge from Old Trafford last summer for £40million.
The Argentine made precious little impression in west London as the Blues stumbled to a 10th-place Premier League finish — missing out on European football entirely. This has fuelled speculation that the 22-year-old could be shown the door, with the Press Association reporting that Chelsea are prepared to sell and will entertain offers in the region of £42.5m.
United could pocket an additional windfall from last year’s Garnacho sale, having shrewdly negotiated a 10 per cent sell-on clause within the agreement, entitling them to a cut of any future transfer fee should Chelsea choose to cash in. Reports emerging from Italy have indicated that Roma are eyeing up the United academy graduate.
It is suggested that the Serie A club’s Champions League qualification would enable them to pursue a permanent transfer should they wish, though they would ideally prefer to bring the winger in on loan with an option to buy. Since Garnacho came through the academy ranks – having joined United from Atletico Madrid for just £100,000 back in 2020 – the original £40m fee received from Chelsea was registered as pure profit under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
The very same financial benefit would apply to any sell-on income United receive further down the line. This follows reports emerging from Turkey suggesting Fenerbahce are expected to snap up Greenwood for €40m (£34m) plus €2m in bonuses. The Red Devils offloaded the forward to French Ligue 1 outfit Marseille during the summer of 2024.
United also negotiated a sell-on clause as part of that deal, entitling them to a significant cut of any future transfer fee Marseille might receive. While early reports differed, the clause is broadly understood to sit somewhere between 40 and 50 per cent.
According to ESPN, both Fenerbahce and Atletico Madrid have struck agreements with Marseille. United stand to pocket €14m (£11.9m) should Greenwood opt for a move to Turkey, or €15.7m (£13.3m) if he heads back to Madrid, where he previously spent time on loan at Getafe while still on United’s books.

Greenwood has netted 48 goals in 81 appearances for Marseille. His outstanding form has prompted former Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi to tip him for Ballon d’Or glory.
He said: “I see him every day, he has huge potential. I don’t see any other players in Europe at the same level.
“He has the potential to win the Ballon d’Or. It will be up to him to decide whether he wants to do everything he can to fight for it or not. At the level of the qualities that nature has given him, that his parents have given him, I think he is worthy of the Ballon d’Or.
“I would like him to be more consistent. I know he needs to press with more intensity, he needs to manage the ball better when the team is in trouble, not lose the ball easily, but keep it to allow the team to move up because he has the ability to do it.”
