Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso has begun his rule with an inspiring inaugural speech to the fans. The 44-year-old Spaniard, who had just started work at the Cobham training complex, was frank in his first interview as manager of the west London giants.
Alonso arrives at Stamford Bridge with the task of revitalising a club that endured a terrible campaign last year. In five great seasons as a player at Liverpool, he won the Champions League, and he got familiar with the Premier League. A track record as a manager with extensive work in Germany and Spain carries high expectations. The Spanish coach notably took Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten Bundesliga and German Cup double in 2023-24, and Chelsea will be hoping for something similar in the future.
Alonso got the bulk of his squad together at Cobham on Thursday, but Enzo Fernandez, Reece James and Malo Gusto remain at the World Cup and will not be joining up yet. The manager has stressed that his brief time in the capital will be founded on a strong work ethic and culture. His demanding style is hoped to pay off soon by supporters who have been waiting for consistency for a long time.
