Liam Delap ready to accept squad role at Chelsea but faces obvious obstacle
Liam Delap is determined to stay at Chelsea and prove his worth after a difficult debut season in west London.
Delap sustained some bad injuries and was only able to score two goals in 41 appearances, which is a dreadful return.
Realistically, how much is Liam Delap worth?🤔
Based on that campaign alone, Chelsea should offload Delap during this transfer window, and that could very well happen.
However, the striker is not going to give up on his Chelsea career so easily.
Nicolas Jackson could easily take Liam Delap’s place in squad
Journalist Simon Phillips has claimed on Si Phillips Talks Chelsea that Delap is ready to accept being a squad player at Stamford Bridge if it means he gets to stay and have another chance to prove himself.
It is admirable, but it would not be a shock if Chelsea have been thinking about replacing Delap with Nicolas Jackson.
Jackson spent last season out on loan at Bayern Munich, but the German club did not want to sign him permanently.
As a result, the 25-year-old has returned to Chelsea and could now be reintegrated into the squad. It means Delap may have to be sold or loaned to make room for him.
If last season is anything to go by, replacing Delap with Jackson is a no-brainer. Emmanuel Emegha could also have a role in Xabi Alonso’s squad next term, so that is another potential obstacle to Delap remaining at Chelsea.

All things considered, Delap may have little control over his future. It has been reported that Alonso would be happy to sell Delap if an offer arrives before the transfer window closes.
The former Ipswich Town man seemingly wants to stay at Chelsea, but moving on to pastures new could benefit everyone, especially Delap. Being a bit-part player under Alonso is not going to help his development, or at least not as much as starting every week would.
