Chelsea could look into moving for Andreas Schjelderup

With Alejandro Garnacho set to leave Stamford Bridge, Chelsea are in the market for an attacker who can play on the left.

Schjelderup only has two years remaining on his contract at Benfica, and that has put Chelsea and other Premier League clubs on high alert.

Transfer insider Ekrem Konur told The Chelsea Chronicle: “Benfica’s young talent Andreas Schjelderup is seriously considering leaving the club this summer, despite having two years left on his current contract. While the Portuguese club have offered him a new deal, the Norwegian attacker has yet to respond due to his long-standing desire to play in the Premier League.

“This situation has put top English clubs on high alert. Chelsea, Liverpool, and Tottenham are all closely monitoring his development and situation.

“Sources close to Chelsea indicate that the London club could look into the player’s situation, but they will not rush into a €40 million move. Benfica, on the other hand, are absolutely unwilling to sell Schjelderup for anything less than €40 million. Furthermore, the player’s contract includes a €100 million release clause, which significantly limits the bargaining power of interested clubs.

“With Schjelderup’s future at Benfica highly uncertain, his ambition to move to England is set to become a major talking point of the summer window. Between Benfica’s firm financial expectations and the player’s career plans, any club wanting to finalise this deal will need to make a significant investment.”

Under Jose Mourinho, Schjelderup helped Benfica to finish third in the Portuguese league last season.

In total, the 22-year-old scored seven goals and provided six assists in 28 games. It is not a bad return for someone his age.

At the World Cup, Schjelderup has also been able to make an impact while representing Norway.

As well as scoring against England, Schjelderup also set up three goals before Norway’s elimination.

All in all, it was a very productive World Cup for Schjelderup, who finishes the tournament with four goal contributions in six outings.

It is no surprise that Premier League clubs are now looking at the Benfica man, who only made two starts for Norway.

Chelsea fans would perhaps still prefer someone who is a bit more proven and experienced. For example, AC Milan’s Rafael Leao, with the Portugal international also being linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.

It has been reported that Chelsea have been offered the chance to sign Leao in this transfer window.

However, Schjelderup is probably a better fit for Chelsea’s model, whether supporters agree with that model or not.
