Frank Lampard is linked to Chelsea, but Sam Allardyce says he could aim higher

Chelsea are now searching for a new manager, and club legend and former boss Frank Lampard continues to be linked. The now Coventry City boss does not appear to be a leading candidate, but there is plenty of chatter given the obvious links between the two parties.

Lampard won the Championship with Coventry City this season, and some believe he is line for another big job, and Sam Allardyce agrees, but the now pundit believes it’s more likely he ends up as England boss than at Chelsea.

It looks as though Andoni Iraola and Cesc Fabregas are leading the race for Chelsea boss as things stand, but Lampard may well be considered given his recent success.

Albeit, Lampard is likely to want to stay where he is in any case, given he is successfully reviving his career with the Sky Blues, where expectations are not big, especially going into the Premier League.

Frank Lampard cannot take the Chelsea risk right now

Success next season will be staying in the Premier League, while expectations will be much greater at another top club, and it would naturally be easier to fail. After a mixed managerial career so far, Lampard needs to be careful about his next move, and Chelsea are not currently in a great situation.

The Stamford Bridge job is not an easy one, as Liam Rosenior found out, and that certainly makes it less attractive to a younger coach who doesn’t want to risk having a black mark on their CV.

That is perhaps why Allardyce feels as though Lampard’s next big job will be on the international stage rather than with Chelsea.

“I don’t think Frank Lampard is destined to go back to Chelsea anytime soon, especially under this current regime,” he told the No Tippy Tappy Football. “I do think that, if he’s managing a Premier League club in the future and doing well, he’d be a good candidate for the England job.”

“If you look back at his first stint at Chelsea when they had a transfer ban, he developed young players like Reece James and Mason Mount and gave them a chance – although he didn’t really have a choice given the financial circumstances he was under.”

Lampard for the England job is a bold shout, but what is obvious is that, at this juncture, Chelsea and Lampard are wrong for each other. The Blues need someone proven at Premier League level and ready to handle the pressure of managing a top club like Chelsea.

Meanwhile, Lampard is rebuilding his career and doing a good job of it. He needs to take his time in mastering being a manager and working his way up. It’s not the time to take a risky job that could leave him back out of the game for a spell.
