According to Si Phillips Talks Chelsea, Alonso has put forward Pep Chavarria’s name as the club look to replace Marc Cucurella, who has joined Real Madrid.

However, one source has told Si Phillips Talks Chelsea that the Blues are struggling to agree on a transfer fee with Rayo Vallecano and the structure of a potential deal.

If Chavarria is a player whom Alonso really wants, that is disappointing to hear. The left-back seems very attainable in this transfer window, but Chelsea are once again making things difficult for themselves.

This comes after their failed pursuit of Sunderland’s Granit Xhaka, another one of Alonso’s targets.

Of course, there is still plenty of time for Chelsea to strike a deal with Rayo. But as of now, this pursuit has been a failure, just as Xhaka’s was.

Alonso does not appear to be too disappointed at the moment. He was very positive during his first interview with the club’s media channels.

But after a season where Chelsea finished 10th and failed to qualify for the Champions League, he will be very aware that this squad needs strengthening. And so far, the club have not delivered.

Again, there is time to correct that, and Chavarria is not exactly Kylian Mbappe. Chelsea’s season is not going to ride on signing him or not.

Nevertheless, many will feel that the club have not backed Alonso enough yet in the transfer window. Cucurella’s departure and Andrey Santos’ move to Premier League rivals Manchester United have not helped matters either.
