Chelsea agree four-year deal for Wigan talent Harrison Bettoni – Read Chelsea F.C.

Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign Wigan Athletic attacking midfielder Harrison Bettoni on a free transfer.

Fabrizio Romano reports that the 18-year-old will sign a contract until June 2030. Chelsea must pay Wigan training compensation because the League One club developed the player.

The agreement continues Chelsea’s recruitment of young British talent, although Bettoni will initially join as a development signing rather than an immediate first-team addition for Xabi Alonso.

Bettoni arrives with senior experience

Bettoni has already made 27 senior appearances for Wigan and scored four goals. He produced his breakthrough moment against AFC Wimbledon last November, scoring twice after coming off the bench during his League One debut.

Wigan describe Bettoni as a technically strong and versatile attacker. He can operate as a number 10, centre-forward or from a wider position, giving Chelsea several possible routes for his development.

Romano confirmed that Chelsea have completed the agreement, with Bettoni choosing Stamford Bridge after attracting interest from Manchester City and AC Milan.

ReadChelsea previously reported that Chelsea had won the race for Bettoni ahead of Manchester City. The Blues have now finalised the move after weeks of talks.

Chelsea must decide whether Bettoni will train at Cobham with the development squad or continue gaining senior experience through a loan. His season in League One suggests he may benefit more from regular first-team football than youth-level matches.

The deal carries limited financial risk because Chelsea will only pay compensation rather than a full transfer fee. Bettoni’s senior experience and positional flexibility also give the club a player with genuine development value rather than a purely speculative academy addition.
