Inter weigh up Spurs pair Spence, Romero plus Chelsea’s Chalobah for defensive rebuild

Romero, 28, captains Tottenham and was part of Argentina’s World Cup-winning squad in 2022, making him one of the most sought-after centre-backs in the Premier League.
For Spence too, financial demands are proving higher than what Inter would like to offer. The Nerazzurri value the left-footed full-back’s card at between €25m and €30m, but word from England suggests Tottenham are seeking a higher fee. Despite this, the Milan club remain on the player’s trail and will attempt to negotiate a move.
In recent weeks, Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah had also emerged strongly as an option for Inter’s defence, but talks with the London club have yet to take off and have currently been put on hold by the Nerazzurri.
The player, who had already signalled his willingness to move to Milan, is coming off a demanding season in which he played almost 4,000 minutes across all competitions, and remains under contract with Chelsea until 2028. That long-term deal is one of the reasons the Blues are not budging from their minimum asking price of €35m.
With three separate defensive targets in play and each carrying a significant price tag, Inter face a busy few weeks of negotiations as they look to strengthen a backline that will need reinforcing both centrally and on the right side ahead of the new season.
The club’s ability to move on fringe players over the coming weeks could prove decisive in determining which, if any, of the three targets they are ultimately able to land.
Inter’s transfer department will need to balance ambition with financial discipline as they weigh up which of the three deals offers the best value for money this summer.
