Chelsea end Romée Leuchter pursuit with Malard preferred – Read Chelsea F.C.
Chelsea have reportedly ended their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain striker Romée Leuchter as they prioritise a move for Manchester United forward Melvine Malard.
Dutch journalist Amber van Lieshout reports that Leuchter’s proposed move to Stamford Bridge is now off, despite Chelsea previously making progress towards an agreement.
The Blues have instead chosen to focus on Malard, who is closing in on a move from Manchester United.
Chelsea have agreed a fee of around £850,000 for the France international, according to the BBC. The transfer would represent a club-record sale for United Women.
Malard is expected to undergo a medical before completing the move and reuniting with Sonia Bompastor in west London.
Chelsea change direction in striker search
Leuchter emerged as a leading Chelsea target following an impressive season with PSG, but the club’s position has changed during the final stages of negotiations.
The Netherlands international will no longer join unless talks are unexpectedly revived. Chelsea now appear confident that Malard offers the stronger option for Bompastor’s rebuilt attack.
The 26-year-old previously worked with the Chelsea head coach at Lyon and has experience across the front line. She scored six Women’s Super League goals and four times in the Champions League for United last season.
As Read Chelsea reported earlier this week, Malard had become a key target after deciding not to extend her Manchester United contract.
Her arrival would add another proven WSL attacker following Sam Kerr’s departure and Aggie Beever-Jones’ new contract.
Chelsea have already strengthened their attack with Manaka Matsukubo this summer. Malard’s versatility would give Bompastor another option centrally or from the left.
The change of direction leaves Leuchter’s future unresolved, while Chelsea are now expected to complete the Malard deal once her medical and personal formalities are finalised.
