Chelsea youngster Jesse Derry has explained why he believes Sporting is the right place for his development after making his first appearance for the Portuguese club.

The 19-year-old, who joined Sporting on a season-long loan after signing a new Chelsea contractspoke to the club’s media following his debut and outlined why the move appealed to him. His words were relayed by To Ball.

“It’s been fantastic. All the players welcomed me really well,” Derry said.

“It’s been incredible and playing in front of the fans was a surreal moment. They were incredible and I can’t wait for more games.”

Derry explains Sporting decision

The winger believes Sporting’s style of play suits his strengths and is looking forward to continuing his development in Portugal.

“The way Sporting play suits my style. The league is incredible. The supporters are incredible as well and I can’t wait to play at the stadium,” he said.

Derry has arrived from Chelsea after an impressive breakthrough campaign, with the Blues sending him to Sporting on loan after extending his contract in west London.

Ronaldo inspiration

The England U19 international also revealed what wearing the No. 28 shirt means to him.

That was the number Cristiano Ronaldo wore when he first broke into Sporting’s senior side before his move to Manchester United.

“Ronaldo is everyone’s idol. Wearing his number is a privilege and I can’t wait to wear it more often,” Derry explained.

The teenager also spoke warmly about former Sporting winger Geovany Quenda, who completed the opposite move to Chelsea this summer.

“Quenda is an incredible guy. He’ll do well,” Derry said, before also praising Sporting manager Rui Borges.

“He’s an incredible coach. You saw how the team played against Celtic.”

Derry made his unofficial debut on Tuesday as Sporting thrashed Celtic 4-1 in a pre-season friendly. He came on after the break and played a part in the build-up to one of the goals. Looks like a good start for the Cobham gem.
