Sky Sports pundit Alan Smith says Alejandro Garnacho needs to get his career “back on track” after new Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso confirmed that the winger does not feature in his plans.

The 21-year-old is expected to be sold less than a year after his £40m move from Manchester United. Speaking exclusively to Chelsea News (courtesy of Best Betting Sites UK), Smith said Garnacho simply hasn’t done enough:

“He didn’t do anything really, did he? Flashes, but nothing. Surprised they bought him. Man United, I’m sure, couldn’t believe that.”

“Look, I don’t know where his career is going. And I’ll be hoping they can get him off the books. He’s obviously on very good money, so that could be a problem. Talk about Roma being interested. But yeah, it just hasn’t worked. He’s got to have a good look at his career and see what he needs to do now to get it back on track.”

Where could Garnacho go?

As Smith mentions, Roma are one of the teams who have registered an interest in the Argentinian international, having proposed a loan with an obligation to buy if certain conditions are met.

However, Chelsea are said to be seeking a permanent sale for €50m (£43m), or at the very least, a loan with a mandatory purchase clause.

Will Chelsea replace him?

There is no guarantee of a like-for-like replacement as Alonso doesn’t generally deploy traditional wingers in his front three. He likes no.10s or no.9s who can play out wide.

Some potential targets have been suggested, though, with West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville, Bologna’s Jonathan Rowe and Benfica’s Andreas Schjelderup among the names under consideration.

The Blues are also big fans of Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers, but a switch to Stamford Bridge is said to be unlikely as the England international favours a move to Arsenal.
