Chelsea reportedly deleted a social media post celebrating Enzo Fernández after it prompted an immediate backlash from supporters following England’s World Cup exit.
Fernández scored Argentina’s equaliser during their 2-1 semi-final victory over Thomas Tuchel’s side in Atlanta on Wednesday.
The midfielder curled a long-range effort beyond Jordan Pickford in the 85th minute before Lautaro Martínez completed the comeback during stoppage time.
Chelsea later shared an image of Fernández cupping his ears during the celebrations. However, the post was quickly removed after some supporters questioned why an English club was publicly celebrating a goal which contributed to England’s elimination.
According to talkSPORT, fans described the post as inappropriate and criticised the club’s social media team for failing to acknowledge the England players involved.

The controversy comes at a sensitive time for Fernández and Chelsea.
The Argentina international has recently been linked with Real Madrid, although the Spanish club publicly denied making a direct or indirect attempt to sign him.
Xabi Alonso has made his position clear. The Chelsea head coach confirmed he wants Fernández to remain at Stamford Bridge following private discussions with the midfielder.
As Read Chelsea reported, Alonso gave a direct “yes” when asked whether Fernández was part of his plans for the new season.
Fernández’s goal sent Argentina towards Sunday’s World Cup final against Spain and continued an outstanding individual tournament.
Chelsea were entitled to recognise their player’s achievement. However, the decision to celebrate the goal without referencing England’s defeat created an avoidable reaction among sections of the fanbase.
Manchester United adopted a more balanced approach by congratulating Lisandro Martínez while also offering commiserations to their England players.
Chelsea’s rapid deletion suggests the club accepted its original post had misjudged the mood.
