Alejandro Garnacho lined up for Man United reunion after Chelsea transfer nightmare

Alejandro Garnacho has been offered the chance to reunite with a former Manchester United teammate with his time at Chelsea appearing to come to an end

Napoli have been offered to sign former Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho this summer.

Garnacho, 22, left United to join Chelsea in a £40million permanent deal 12 months ago. But the Blues are keen to offload the Argentine after just one season at Stamford Bridge.

He struggled for form in 2025/26, scoring just eight goals and adding four assists in 43 appearances across all competitions and lost his place in the XI near the end of the season. With that, Garnacho wasn’t selected to represent Argentina at this summer’s World Cup.

Now, following the appointment of Xabi Alonso as Chelsea’s new manager, the club have decided that Garnacho doesn’t feature in their plans and are prepared to sell him.

They want to recoup as much of the £40m they paid for him last summer, but understand a loan with an obligation to buy might be more realistic, given his form last season.

Napoli are among those that have been offered Garnacho by the club and his representatives, according to Calcio Mercato. A move to Naples would see him reunite with former United teammate Scott McTominay there.

However, Napoli have ‘closed the door’ on signing Garnacho for the moment as ‘signings of that calibre aren’t on the cards’. This is thought to be due to ‘age, long-term planning and wage demands’.

Despite this, a move to Serie A is appearing the most realistic for Garnacho, with Juventus, Como, Roma and Inter Milan among the others linked with making a summer transfer.

What is clear at this point is that Garnacho doesn’t have a future at Chelsea. Indeed, speaking in his first Blues press conference on Monday, Alonso said that the ex-United man is free to leave.

Alonso said: “Well the situation is that we have spoken with the sporting directors.

“There is an interest for him (Garnacho) from other clubs. So let’s see how this develops. But hopefully, it finishes in the best possible way for other clubs.”

Before his move to Chelsea, Garnacho had spent the previous four-and-a-half years at United. In that time, Garnacho made 144 senior appearances for the Reds, scoring 26 goals.

When asked if he regrets the way he left Old Trafford, Garnacho – who expressed his desire to quit the club before he did – said: “Maybe yes, because I loved that club. They gave me the confidence from the start.

“From Spain, to bring me to the academy, then they bring me to the first team. So it was like four or five years, and amazing love from everyone.”

He added: “I remember in the last six months I was just not playing like before at Manchester United. I started to be on the bench, it’s not a bad thing.

“I was only 20 years old, but in my mind it was like I had to play every game. In my mind, maybe it is also on me, I started to do some bad things.

“But yes, it was just this moment in life and sometimes you have to make decisions and I am really proud to be here (at Chelsea) and still in the Premier League at a club like this. Everyone knows the team we have and the things we can do.

“Sometimes, we have better moments or worse moments, I am proud to be here but with United, I have nothing wrong to say about the club, no one in the club or the team-mates. It’s just a moment in life that changes and life continues. I have no regrets.”
