Chelsea work to tie down Mheuka as Wilson joins Rochdale on loan
His current deal runs until 2027, but the teenager is understood to be close to agreeing new terms being floated by Chelsea ahead of a loan move, with EFL clubs and some sides in Europe having already registered their interest, reports the London Evening Standard.
Mheuka is highly rated at Chelsea’s Cobham training ground and won the Premier League 2 player of the season award for 2025-26 after leading the club’s Under-21s to the league title, scoring 18 goals in just 19 appearances. He made his senior Chelsea debut in a Conference League win over FC Astana.
Reflecting on his award-winning campaign, Mheuka said: “It has been a great season for me and I’m very proud to receive this award. I’ve worked hard throughout the year and I’m grateful to my family, the staff and my team-mates for all of their support.”
Elsewhere at Cobham, defender Kaiden Wilson has joined EFL side Rochdale on a season-long loan, taking his first step into senior football after an important campaign for Chelsea’s Under-21 side last season. Wilson, who signed a contract extension until 2030 earlier this year, joined Chelsea from grassroots football at Under-14 level and has developed through the club’s academy ever since.
He was an unused substitute for Chelsea’s first team in a UEFA Conference League match away to Astana in December 2024, and now gets the chance to gain senior experience on loan in League One.
Both moves reflect Chelsea’s broader approach to developing its academy talent, balancing the need to protect its most promising prospects contractually while still ensuring they gain regular senior football away from Stamford Bridge. With a host of young players emerging from Cobham in recent seasons, the club continues to monitor loan destinations closely to ensure each player’s development is matched to the right level of competition, with further academy departures possible before the transfer window closes.
Mheuka’s situation in particular will be closely watched, given the scale of his goalscoring form at Under-21 level and the growing interest from clubs keen to offer him a senior stage on which to continue that progress.
