Pep Chavarria remains a priority target for Stamford Bridge this summer. But talks have stalled badly over the price. Chelsea have made little headway in bridging the valuation gap with Rayo Vallecano, and the latest transfer news suggests a breakthrough is still some way off.
Pep Chavarria Deal Hits A Release Clause Wall
As reported by BBC Sport, Rayo Vallecano will not sell unless the full release clause is paid. That figure now stands at £42.4m, well above what the Blues have offered so far. The number has surprised many in English footballgiven the player’s fairly low profile until now.
Chelsea’s recruitment team has grown frustrated with the pace of these talks. An opening offer of £15m was turned down almost immediately, and although the Blues later raised that to £21.2m, Rayo Vallecano still see it as short of their number. With the transfer window edging closer to its end, time is no longer on Chelsea’s side.
Meanwhile, the distance between the two valuations stays wide. Rayo Vallecano insist the fee is fair, even though Pep Chavarria has spent much of his career outside Spain’s top flight.
As reported by Football365, personal terms have already been agreed between player and club. This suggests the holdup is purely financial, not a question of interest. A compromise on price may be the only way forward.
Why Rayo Vallecano Are Standing Firm
Much of that confidence stems from Rayo Vallecano’s smart trading history, which has left the club in solid financial shape. Because of that, there is little pressure on them to sell for a reduced fee, and it gives them real leverage in negotiations.
As reported by TEAMtalk, the Blues have warned they could walk away unless Rayo Vallecano softens their stance. Spanish tax rules add another layer too, since any profit from a sale would be taxed at 25%, reducing what the Spanish club would actually receive.
Statistically, several at the club feel Pep Chavarria compares favorably to Marc Cucurella, whose move to Real Madrid last month brought the Blues £51.8m. That comparison, however, remains a point of debate among pundits and fans alike.

What Pep Chavarria Could Bring To Chelsea
There is also a personal angle to this pursuit, with Xabi Alonso said to be pushing hard for the signing. It stems back to a strong outing the left-back put in against Real Madrid last November, one that reportedly left a lasting impression on the Spaniard. As a result, the head coach now wants a left-sided option to pair with Marco Palestra, his first signing at the Premier League club, as reported by BBC Sport.
Pep Chavarria for Rayo Vallecano in 2025/26, as per FOTMOB:
| Competitions | Matches | Goals | Assists | Chances Created |
| The League | 33 | 1 | 2 | 27 |
| King’s Cup | 3 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
| Conference League | 8 | 0 | 1 | 6 |
As reported by Sky Sports, Pep Chavarria ranks among the better full-backs in his league for crosses and corners won. He also does his share of defensive work, which is a fairly rare mix for a player his age.
For now, though, the two clubs have not agreed a fee. The talks remain ongoing, and how fast the release clause gap narrows could decide whether the move happens before the window shuts.
Alonso built much of his name at Bayer Leverkusen on a fluid back line built around adaptable full-backs. Adding a flexible option on the left would let him try that same approach at Stamford Bridge. Whether the Blues land their man still depends on how far Rayo Vallecano are willing to bend.
