Chelsea have reached an agreement with Aston Villa to sign England’s FIFA World Cup star Morgan Rogers. The Englishman will be moving to Stamford Bridge for a stunning £117 million.

According to a report by David Ornstein on The Athletic, Rogers had been in talks with Arsenal, but has now opted to join Chelsea. The Aston Villa star was keen on leaving Villa Park, and will undergo a medical on Monday.

Mikel Arteta has been in talks with the forward for weeks, and reports suggested that he had convinced him. He was seen as the ideal replacement for Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli in the starting XI on the left flank.

However, Xabi Alonso has now convinced him that a move to Stamford Bridge is better suited to him. Chelsea have acted swiftly since the call between the manager and the player, and have sealed the deal.

Rogers will undergo a medical as soon as he lands in the United Kingdom, after the England squad have finished the FIFA World Cup. They play their final match of the tournament – the third-place playoff against France today, July 18.

The Aston Villa star has not scored at the FIFA World Cup, but assisted the opening goal in the semifinal against Argentina.

Xabi Alonso on Chelsea players at the FIFA World Cup

Chelsea had a few players at the FIFA World Cup this summer, but only Enzo Fernandez, Reece James, Trevoh Chalobah, and Malo Gusto remain in the United States. All the players are still involved, and Xabi Alonso admitted that he was not surprised that they are yet to exit the tournament.

The new Chelsea manager has been working with the players who did not get selected for the World Cup, and said that he hopes to have his players back as World Champions. He said:

“It was already in the plan, so it is not a big surprise that at this stage we still have some players. I am happy for them because what they are living is an unforgettable experience. Hopefully at the end we will have a world champion when they come back to Cobham and we will celebrate that, but we adapt, we have to be flexible in that situation and we will have to speed it up in preparation with some players, but it is going to happen.”

Apart from Enzo Fernandez, no other Blues player will be able to win the FIFA World Cup this summer. Valentin Barco is expected to join after the tournament is done.
