£117m out of absolutely nowhere!

A fee of £117m has been agreed between Chelsea and Villa, with Behdad Eghbali central to talks between the two parties. Xabi Alonso is also said to have been heavily involved, speaking to Rogers himself.

The deal sees Chelsea secure their second signing under the Spanish boss, after Marco Palestra. A few hours later, Rogers started for England in their World Cup third-place play-off against France in Miami.

Amid the noise that Rogers would be joining Chelsea instead of Arsenal, the Villa star might have been forgiven for having his mind on other things. The third-place clash, after all, is often deemed sub-par.

However, this was anything but. England led 4-0 at half-time, incredibly and yet France almost produced one of the World Cup’s biggest-ever comebacks. Ultimately, England would go on to win 6-4, late on.

A Bukayo Saka hat-trick, along with goals from Declan Rice, Ezri Konsa and Jude Bellingham got the job done in what was probably the game of the tournament. Chelsea fans, though, only had eyes for Rogers.

Chelsea fans are delighted with their club for pulling off a deal of such magnitude, spending a British transfer record to land the playmaker. One Blues fan commented he was “too good” on Sunday night.

Another described him as “England’s best player”, while another said he has “really been brilliant” in this game”, even if rival fans teased Rogers for failing to deliver a goal or assist among the six England scored.

What Danny Murphy noticed about Morgan Rogers off the ball…

It might not have been a vintage display from Rogers and without doubt, the playmaker has played better. But he helped England control the tempo and in transition, Rogers was key to the performance.

A brilliant game and a brilliant evening for Chelsea fans, who also saw Maxence Lacroix, Malo Gusto, Reece James, and Trevoh Chalobah all feature. Chalobah came on for England in the final few minutes.

But Rogers was obviously the one being watched by Chelsea fans and they will have been delighted to see his work off the ball, too. Danny Murphy, on co-commentary for BBC Sport, was impressed.

After a France counter, Murphy watched Rogers race back: “Just watched Morgan Rogers sprint back 60 or 70 yards to stop that attack. Love that mentality,” which is sure to win Chelsea fans over next term.
