Morgan Rogers joining Chelsea means defender will surely leave, thanks to Cole Palmer

It sees Chelsea smash their record transfer with the deal for Rogers, while the former Middlesbrough and Man City star will become the fourth-most-expensive transfer of all time; £1m more than Elliot Anderson.

But what does Rogers’ arrival mean for Chelsea’s current players? Alejandro Garnacho is expected to go with Roma pushing for his signing, while Pedro Neto may be seen as a potential sale if offers come in.

However, another Chelsea player in a completely different position could well be feeling the pressure regarding his future at Stamford Bridge now that Rogers is signing for Chelsea, thanks to Cole Palmer.

Tosin Adarabioyo’s importance to Chelsea is dwindling

Of Chelsea’s senior squad, only two players have just two years left on their contracts. One is Trevoh Chalobah, though the Serie A-bound defender does have the option to extend his deal by a year.

The other is Tosin Adarabioyo, who continues to fall down the pecking order. As things stand, Levi Colwill is first pick and a new signing is likely to go in alongside the England defender, possibly Maxence Lacroix.

Without Europe, Chelsea do not need the cover they currently boast at centre-back. Benoit Badiashile, Mamadou Sarr, Wesley Fofana, Axel Disasi, and Chalobah have all been linked with possible departures.

One feather in Tosin’s cap, though, is his relationship with Palmer. The two are renowned to be incredibly close friends, and one of Xabi Alonso’s biggest tasks as manager is getting the best out of Palmer again.

Keeping Tosin might have been deemed important to help Palmer thrive. But now, with Palmer’s best pal arriving in Rogers, the need to keep Tosin is dwindling. He’s no longer needed on or off the pitch.

Without Europe, Chelsea only really need four or five central defenders, even if Alonso chooses to use a back five. If that is the case, Jorrel Hato and Reece James will be considered either side of Colwill.

If Lacroix joins, Colwill could move to the left and James on the right. With Josh Acheampong considered ‘untouchable’, the best Tosin can hope for at Chelsea is fifth or sixth choice, and even that is unlikely.

Keeping him just because he is Palmer’s best Chelsea pal is slightly whimsical, but that is the importance of getting Palmer back to his best. Alonso has alluded to building his team around the England star.

But with Rogers in the building, Tosin is no longer required to fulfil that department and having fallen down the pecking order, a move is likely. But interest in the former Fulham defender has been lacking.

Cesc Fabregas’ Como are said to have asked about Tosin in talks, but with Chalobah now seemingly set to join the ambitious Serie A side, a move to Como seems unlikely. But clubs will certainly start looking.
