Chelsea could be about to make a serious mistake with Mamadou Sarr

However, it was perhaps not the wisest decision. Sarr ended up playing just three times in the Premier League, stalling his development.

It was also the 20-year-old who was at fault for the first goal Chelsea conceded in the second leg of their last 16 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

Understandably, Chelsea are willing to loan out Sarr again. According to The Standard, the Blues are keen for the Senegal international to join another Premier League club on loan.

However, the same outlet has claimed that Chelsea are also open to keeping Sarr at Stamford Bridge for the 2026/27 season. All things considered, though, that would be a mistake.

Sarr still looks very raw and that was clear to see last term. He needs more time to mature and develop, and that is a difficult thing for a young player to do at Chelsea due to all the competition and pressure there.

If Sarr remains in west London, it will be a very similar theme to last season. In their first team, Chelsea currently have Levi Colwill, Trevoh Chalobah, Wesley Fofana, Jorrel Hato, Tosin Adarabioyo, Josh Acheampong and Benoit Badiashile for the centre-back positions.

Chalobah is expected to join Como, while Hato could play at left-back under Xabi Alonso. However, Sarr would still have to compete against several other names for a starting spot, while Chelsea could also sign Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace.

There is no doubt that a loan move is the best option for Sarr. Another half season or a full one at Chelsea could halt his development even further.
