Fernández has strengthened Chelsea’s position

Fernández enters the final following an outstanding tournament for Argentina.

The 25-year-old scored the late equaliser during their semi-final victory over England before Lautaro Martínez completed the comeback. Fernández also struck a stoppage-time winner against Egypt earlier in the knockout stages.

His performances have strengthened Chelsea’s position over any potential sale. The club were already reluctant to lose one of Alonso’s most technically secure midfielders, and his World Cup form has made their £120m valuation easier to defend.

ReadChelsea recently examined Atlético Madrid’s reported interest in Fernández, but the financial demands surrounding a transfer create a considerable obstacle.

Atlético would likely need to generate a major sum through player sales before approaching Chelsea. Real Madrid remain the more obvious destination, although their public statement denying an active pursuit cooled the prospect of an immediate deal.

Chelsea therefore retain control. Fernández remains under a long-term contract and has not submitted a formal transfer request.

Alonso has already made his decision

Alonso provided a direct answer when asked whether Fernández was part of his plans during his first Chelsea press conference.

The manager’s position is understandable. Fernández offers progressive passing, control under pressure and an increasing goal threat from midfield. His 2025/26 campaign has produced 18 goals across 65 appearances for club and country.

Chelsea have already lost Cucurella and are still rebuilding several areas of the squad. Selling another experienced senior player would create an additional problem before Alonso has completed his first pre-season.

The Spaniard has spoken about creating a strong culture and making quality decisions during his first official interview as Chelsea manager. Convincing Fernández that Stamford Bridge remains the best place for him would provide an early example of that leadership.

Chelsea should resist anything below £120m

Fernández may still prefer a move to Madrid, particularly with Chelsea unable to offer European football next season. His representatives have not hidden their willingness to consider other opportunities.

However, personal preference does not remove Chelsea’s leverage. No club has submitted an offer close to their valuation, and Madrid insist they are not currently pursuing the midfielder.

The World Cup final could further increase his reputation. Another decisive display would also reinforce the sporting argument for keeping him alongside Moisés Caicedo, Cole Palmer and incoming attacker Morgan Rogers.

Chelsea should only reconsider if a club reaches the £120m mark. Anything lower would weaken Alonso’s midfield without providing enough compensation for replacing a player entering his peak years.

Sunday’s final places Cucurella and Fernández on opposing sides, but Chelsea’s focus will extend beyond the result. One former player has already moved to Madrid. The club should ensure Fernández remains part of Alonso’s future.
