Chelsea owners eye Santos talent – BlueCo route could mirror Andrey Santos strategy
Chelsea’s search for the next elite young talent has reportedly led them to Santos midfielder Gabriel Bontempo.
BlueCo is now monitoring the Brazilian as they consider repeating a strategy that has already become familiar within the group.
Brazilian outlet RTI Sport reports the 21-year-old has joined BlueCo’s list of closely watched prospects. Santos are yet to receive a formal offer. However, the Premier League club’s owners are said to believe Bontempo fits the profile they have targeted repeatedly since taking control at Stamford Bridge.
The interest comes after Bayern Munich were also linked with the midfielder, suggesting Europe’s biggest clubs are beginning to circle around one of Santos’ most highly-rated academy graduates.
BlueCo have a familiar plan
According to the report, BlueCo’s preferred route would not involve taking Gabriel Bontempo directly into Chelsea’s first-team squad.
Instead, the group are considering the same pathway used with Andrey Santos. The Brazilian midfielder initially struggled for opportunities in England before developing through a loan spell. Meanwhile, BlueCo have also invested heavily in South American prospects such as Kendry Páez with long-term planning in mind.
RTI Esporte claims the current idea would see Gabriel Bontempo move first to RC Strasbourg, allowing him to adapt to European football before any potential switch to Chelsea.
That model has become an increasingly important part of BlueCo’s recruitment strategy, particularly for teenagers arriving from South America.
Santos in strong negotiating position
Gabriel Bontempo recently renewed his contract with Santos until December 2028. This puts the Brazilian club in a comfortable position as interest grows.
His release clause is set at €100m (£86.5m), although clauses of that size are rarely paid in full and instead provide clubs with leverage during negotiations.
The attacking midfielder is capable of operating centrally, in wider attacking positions or slightly deeper in midfield. His versatility has become one of his biggest selling points. Alongside this, his passing range, composure in possession and tactical intelligence are also strengths.
Bontempo has already established himself as one of the standout products of Santos’ academy. He is viewed internally as someone capable of leading the club’s next generation.
What happens next
Chelsea’s interest appears to remain at the scouting stage rather than the negotiation stage, with RTI Esporte stressing that Santos have not received an official approach.
However, the presence of Bayern Munich alongside BlueCo is unlikely to reduce the competition.
If Gabriel Bontempo continues on his current trajectory, Santos may soon find themselves facing concrete offers rather than simple monitoring.
